Crowds of people attended Birmingham’s “chalksgiving” this weekend to express concerns and spread awareness on animal cruelty. The aim of the weekend is to shine a light on the 45 million turkeys that will be put to death for the American thanks-giving holiday.

Birmingham Vegan Advocacy led the event which gave the public the opportunity to create vegan inspired art on the roads of Birmingham high street. The activist group engaged with the public, spreading information about veganism and animal rights.

Willow Rawley, the leader of the activist group, said: “We find this is really effective as well as it stays there.

“We don’t have to talk to loads of people, the message just gets through straight away”.

It wasn’t just adults that were getting involved with the movement. Many parents encouraged their kids to become included.

Willow said: “It shows you that children still have their compassion. It’s funny because we grow up eating meat and disassociate from it a bit. Like as a kid we go on trips to farms and we look at all the cute little animals but then you know, you go home and mum feeds you a beef burger.”

The activist group have plans to start some awakening compassion demos and hope to get some business cards, banners and chalk boards to improve future events.
