This halloween, Birmingham students got the fright of their lives when they discovered an unexpected flat mate. The first mouse was seen in Flat 8 of the University Locks on Monday night, leading to the students attempting to catch the furry fiend themselves. The freshers have used scarves and bags in a desperate attempt to barricade the entrances to their bedroom doors, in the hopes to keep the pest away.
Blanka, a first year student living in flat 8, explained how her flat mates attempted to catch the mouse as they thought it was “cute” and didn’t want to harm it. They left a trail of blueberries, strawberries and cheese, leading to a plastic tupperware with a penny coin carefully placed on top. The idea behind the penny coin is that if the coin was moved, the students would have some idea of the whereabouts of where the mouse has been. This has been seen to be unsuccessful as the students have now called upon accommodation management to deal with the scary scenario.
David Pennels, Manager of University Locks, has said: “We’ve got in touch with Pestakill and have signed up to a 12 month contract.
“This includes bait being laid, with mousetraps in every common area of Block B (the effected block).
“We agreed to a 12 month contract so that we can be certain that all the mice will be gone”.
It’s clear that students living here in the city are more likely to run into rodents as the canal is on their doorstep, however, a mouse trespassing into the accommodation building raises concerns amongst the residents. Students have become apprehensive when taking out their bins as they’re anxious of the germs and diseases that the rodents may carry.
David Pennels advises students to “keep their living areas clean and tidy” in the hopes to reduce chances of any situations similar to this happening again.
